Baking Day

Measuring...
The girls take after their mother...the best part of baking is licking the beater.

Our first attempt at Oreo truffles. Place 1 pound of oreos in food processor and puree to a pulp.
Add 8 ounces softened cream cheese, cubed. Puree again.

This is the filling when it's done. Remove and store in refrigerator for several hours.

I used a small melon baller to make the truffles. I scooped some into my hand and then rolled them. I can promise you that I never knew how much grease was in an oreo cookie until I made these. My hands were nasty. Once the balls were made, I placed the whole tray in the freezer.

We forgot to take pictures the next day while Mom and I were dipping them in the chocolate, so they really are much prettier finished. I melted 1/3 of a bar of paraffin wax and 1 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips in a double boiler. Then we used a toothpick to dip the truffles in the chocolate and placed them on wax paper. We spooned a tiny bit of chocolate on top of each truffle to cover up the hole from the toothpick.

Oh. My. Goodness. If you like oreos, this is divine.

We also made silver bell cookies. These are one of my childhood favorites.Finished silverbells.

Then, of course, there were sugar cookies to decorate.

We had so much fun baking together. We made biscotti and pound cake in addition to all of the above. It was a joy to deliver all of our goodies to friends and family.

"Old Ladies Luncheon"

Every year at Christmas, my great-aunt, Nanaine Dot, has the "Old Ladies Luncheon". This picture shows my grandmother (Grammy, top left), her sister (Nanaine Dot, top right), and three of their mother's four remaining sisters, Mabel, Ernestine (Te-Teen), and Scholastique (Ca-tee). This year, my mom was driving my grandparents there (Lutcher, the end of the earth), so the kids and I tagged along because they never met the old aunts.
These old ladies are adorable. They are 89, 81, and 86. How cool is it that my kids got to see their great-great-great aunts?! They also got to see a few cousins who are their age as Nanaine Dot has lots of great-grandchildren. They really had a ball and were so well-behaved. I was so proud of them.
And here's Papa feeding Ava her third bowl of ice cream. I don't know who enjoyed that more. Ava ADORES her Papa. I hope we can make it next year.
