32

God has blessed me so abundantly that it almost leaves me speechless.  I'm packing up to head to Alabama tomorrow with my dearest sisters, but I wanted to post something about my birthday yesterday.

It left me so full in the best ways....the eyes-about-to-spill-over-with-tears-ways...the God-is-so-very-present-in-this-moment ways...the heart-stretching ways...the Jesus-just-actually-touched-my-heart ways.

Mementos of a lovely day...
Gifts from my husband and babies...

...including a stainless steel cupcake water bottle!  (Maybe I'll drink more water now?)

...and this beautiful book that I have been waiting and waiting for.

...my mama who always finds the most perfect cards that make me tear up...

...a friend who knows me well...
...a big yummy cupcake with only a few candles to blow out...

...and the gift of a new godchild arriving in about nine weeks...

How did I get an eight year old?

My big boy turns eight today.  I'm not sure when or how that happened, except of course that it has been all too fast.  He blows me away with the things he reads and the stuff he knows...there are plenty of times that I think he should just take over homeschooling his sisters in history and science.

Jacob's had a big year...he became a big brother again to another sister, and after a brief moment of "seriously, another girl" almost-tears, he says that we have the best baby in the world.  And Annelise absolutely knows that she hit the jackpot in the big brother department.

He also made his first confession and First Holy Communion in May.  Not liking to be the center of attention, he asked if he could skip the group thing and just have his at a regular Mass.  Fr. Chester was so kind to honor his request, and on May 1st, First Saturday honoring Our Lady in her month, my little man received Our Lord for the first time.  It is a joy to share this gift with him.  And he is such great accountability, always reminding me that "Hey, Mom!  It's June!  I need to go to confession again."  (We told him we'd go once a month as a family.)

Today we were supposed to spend the day with sweet friends at a gem of a water park that's not too far from here.  But the chance of rain is now too high to drive there.  We'll be rescheduling soon!

**update:  Looks like we may be back on!!  Thank you, Jesus!**

(Hopefully, pictures will follow.  But you know me and blogging...we have relationship issues with each other.)

Happy Birthday, my little man!!!

Happy Birthday, Gracie!

Happy birthday, sweet girl!

I cannot believe that you are five! It really blows my mind. I love being your mommy, even on days when I don't. You are so full of life and spunk, and you have an incredible heart for Our Lord. I have no doubt that you will lead a life that is pleasing to Him.

This morning I gave Mary-Grace the American Girl doll Molly that I got when I was in the 3rd grade. She was so excited! She'd been wanting a big-girl doll for quite some time, and I was thrilled that I had one of mine to give her. We had birthday donuts this morning, then cupcakes at co-op, and then we went to Mass. Her nanny and parrain and their kids are coming over for beinets tonight at her request. We look forward to this birthday weekend!
Love you, precious girl!

30!

I remember when my mom turned thirty; I had just turned seven. I remember like it was yesterday. My dad had told my mom that he had a partners' dinner meeting, so my grandmother picked me up from school and took me to my aunt's house. When I got there, my aunt took me in her room and opened a big box on her dresser. The cake inside read "Happy Birthday, Brenda!"

Confused, I looked up at Nanny. She told me that there was no meeting, but Dad was giving Mom a surprise party. I was SO mad at him for not telling me! (He actually apologized for this last night, saying that was his one regret. I said, "Are you kidding?! I so would have blown it!") Anyway, I remember the clothes I wore, the people who were there. I remember my Papa waiting and watching by the door, all antsy, ready to turn off the light at the exact right moment. I remember the look of shock on her face when she walked in the door.

Well, now it's my turn. But the party was not a surprise, which is FINE by me. Instead, I got to pick a few of the friends closest to my heart to join my family for a wonderful dinner at my mom's house. I come from a divorced family, and if I didn't already know that God was sovereign, I would surely learn it each time one of my children celebrates a birthday. All the grandparents come and are at peace with each other, and it's a kodak moment for God's glory and power to heal. Last night was no exception. Families who haven't technically been family for years came to celebrate with me. My friends gave up evenings with their children, hired babysitters and travelled from near and far to be with me.

And wonderful it was. My mom cooked a huge gumbo, potato salad, and garlic bread, although I only ate a small bowl because I ate SO much spinach dip and baked brie before dinner! She made my favorite cake, which I think became a lot of people's favorite cake last night. Coby and Kessie brought their big ole Vita Mix to make pina coladas for us...Kessie and I looked forward to this all week! My children got a big kick out of their mom having a birthday party. They were quite bummed on Friday night when I told them that all of our friends were coming, but none of THEIR friends were. Then I told them Uncle Jeff and Aunt Katherine would be there, and they quickly decided that Uncle Jeff single-handedly made up for the fact that there friends couldn't come. My dad was also a real trooper and spent much of the evening in the garage getting pelted with tennis balls.

Then came presents. I certainly didn't expect gifts from my friends, but they were so sweet to spoil me. I got a gift card for a manicure and pedicure, new pajamas (that I'm currently wearing and LOVE), a precious coffee/tea mug, sets of coffee and espresso cups (do my people know me, or what?), a beautiful new sweater, lovely notecards, gift cards to Bed, Bath, and Beyond, as well as extra money from family to choose what I'd like. More importantly, they gave me their time, and I am truly grateful.
Then the big gift came...my new laptop! I was so shocked that I'm not sure I really reacted. Phil historically does not shop for me. I tell him what I'd like, and he gets it. So this was a super sweet gift because he did it on his own, and my kids didn't even spill the beans. I'm not sure what he was thinking letting them in on the secret, but I guess he has more faith in them than I do.

One of the guys told me last night that turning 30 was hard for him; every year since has been fine, but that initial goodbye to the twenties didn't sit too well. I thought about that all evening and this morning. Here's what I think:

I'm glad to say goodbye to my twenties, although they were great. I married in my twenties, had children, bought our first house, had another baby. More than that, God grew me and stretched me, especially in this last year, in ways I never could have imagined. He has drawn me close to His heart, and has reminded me over and over again that His heart is the safest place to be. This last year, I have spent more time with Him as friends lost babies to miscarriage, as one lost a baby in heart surgery, and as other friends birthed more babies. I spent one day at the hospital waiting for a friend to give birth and that night attended the wake of a seven-month old. Job's verse "The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord" took on a whole new meaning in my heart. I was reminded that only He knows what is and what will be for His glory and the good of our souls. And I can rest in that.

So this morning, I'm sitting in my new pjs, writing on my new laptop, drinking my decaf with creme brulee creamer out of my new mug. It's been a good morning. I think I'll keep 30 around for a while. I'm not sure what God has in store for me in my thirties, but I know that He knows so that's good enough for me.

If my thirties will bring more grace, deeper relationships with family and friends, new friends, more babies, and will bring me even further into God's heart, then I'm so there.

Happy Birthday, Ava!!!

Our sweet Ava-girl turned two on Friday! She keeps walking around saying, "I 2! I 2!" She loved all of the phone calls she got that day....this kid loves to talk on the phone. Wonder where she gets that from!

Ava is a bundle of joy. She lights up the room with singing and dancing, and she loves to give hugs and kisses. She is such a cuddle bug and would love nothing more than for her mommy to hold her all day long. That is, until Daddy comes home. Ava is a total nut for her daddy. It's really an amazing thing to witness. I pray that the way she loves her daddy transfers into love for our Heavenly Father. She is a wonderful little sister and will follow Mary-Grace wherever she goes, sometimes to Mary-Grace's dismay. She's been a challenge these last couple of months as we've gotten back into the school routine, but through it all, God is using her to teach me lots of lessons. I'm learning to prioritize, be creative, move quickly, and sit a lot less!

I love you, Ava Kate!! I pray God's richest blessings on you this year.

Love,

Mommy

Six Years of Jacob

My precious boy turned six this past Monday. I am so thankful for this child! He was absolutely the easiest baby ever, even from conception, and he was my only unmedicated birth. He continues to be such a joy. He has challenged me to think outside the box, to learn how to meet his needs, and to seek the Lord more diligently in my parenting. He is absolutely brilliant and loves to learn. It has been such fun being his teacher this last year. I have loved learning and growing with him, and I look forward to many more years of celebrating faith, life and love with him.

Love you, sweet boy!

Mary-Grace "Saint" Therese Landreneau

My sweet Gracie turns 4 years old today!!! And the title of this entry is how she says her name when you ask for it in full. She is named for Our Lady and for St. Therese, the saint who has interceded so much on my behalf.

The above picture was taken this morning over birthday donuts. And the wild hair TOTALLY fits her personality.

What a gift this child is! I haved learned so much about the character of God since she has been in my life. I have learned how merciful He is with me because I am constantly having to show her mercy. I have learned how patient He is with me while trying to be patient with her. She is such a light to us. She keeps us on our toes. There are many days that I thank the Lord just for having survived another day with Mary-Grace. She is intense when she is disobedient, but she is more intense spiritually. She has challenged me time and again, and the Lord continually refines me through her.

Happy Birthday, Brown-Eyed Girl! I love you so much!

Happy Birthday, Ava!!!

Our sweet baby girl is one year old today. How in the world did that happen?! It was one year ago yesterday that I wanted to kiss my OBGYN when he told me he would induce me the next day. Seriously.

Ava is all smiles and such a mama's girl. Her newest word as of yesterday is "whoa!" She says this when I plop her down from standing (she can get herself up but can't get down.) It's adorable. She is such a sweet blessing.

I made this slide show of her first year. I know it's a lot of pictures, but I narrowed it down as much as I could.

Happy birthday, precious girl! We love you so much!
